Warm Apple Crisp

I love anything with apples and cinnamon. This is aromatic for the house and spirit.

  • 5-6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped pecans or almonds
  • tiny pinch of salt
  • 3/4 – 1 cup all-purpose flour (I use a mix of whole wheat and white flour)

  • 2 1/2 pounds (about 6 cups) of your favorite baking apple
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F and lightly spray a deep pie dish or other medium baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. For the topping, mix the brown sugar, cinnamon, oats, nuts and salt into the melted butter. Add the flour a few tablespoons at a time until the mixture forms a dry crumble–I use a fork to mix. Just don’t add so much flour that it can’t adhere to the other ingredients. Set topping aside.
  3. Peel, core and chop apples, dropping pieces in dish as you go.
  4. Mix the dry ingredients for the filling and sprinkle over apples in dish. Toss a bit to coat the apples evenly.
  5. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the apples and bake at 400 degrees for about 40 minutes or until the top is golden and the apples are bubbling in their thickened juices. If the top browns before this happens, cover it with foil until the apples are done.
